University Health Service Policy

The University Health Service has as its objective the preservation and promotion of the health, physical and mental, of the University community.

Its primary concern is the provision of available and accessible medical services to the student body by health care professionals who are familiar with the University milieu and the needs of this patient group. When possible and appropriate, the Service provides limited medical services to teaching and administrative staff and others, and assists the University, on request, in any other areas of health legislation or impact, such as Workers' Compensation, Occupational Health and Safety, and Biosafety. The functions of the Service include:

  1. a general medical ambulatory service, providing the range of services normally available in a general practice clinic, a physiotherapy service and limited prescription drugs free or at cost;
  2. a psychiatric service, which emphasizes short-term, out-patient treatment of emotional problems;
  3. an athletic injury service operated in cooperation with the Department of Athletics and Recreation;
  4. participation in medical and allied teaching activities through the provision of placements for residents in psychiatry, orthopedic surgery, psychology, social work and family and community medicine;
  5. health education and outreach programmes that emphasize preventive medicine;
  6. research on student health problems to the extent its resources permit.

Finances

The Service covers its operating costs from a compulsory student incidental fee and revenue collected from the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP), other insurance plans, and, on occasion, by direct payment for services rendered.

Records

Patient records will be subject to the usual safekeeping procedures and confidentiality observed by hospitals and other medical institutions.
