Dr. Colin Furness is an Associate Professor (teaching stream) at the Faculty of Information, where he directs courses in research methods, professional identity, and misinformation. Having arrived at the University of Toronto in 1986 as an undergraduate, he has remained on campus for all but three years since, variously as student, staff, and then faculty. Colin holds four U of T degrees (BSc in Psychology, 1990; MISt in Information Systems, 1999; PhD in Knowledge Management, 2010; MPH in Epidemiology, 2014).

Colin’s research has been situated at the intersection of information technology, organizational knowledge use, and public health. His current work involves the development and testing of theory concerning the social precarity of experts and expert thinking. Colin’s name is familiar to many from his active role as a public epidemiologist during the COVID-19 pandemic.
