Over the past decade, Mr. Vahed has volunteered his time to UTM, serving as a member of the UTM Campus Council, the Council of Presidents and the UTM Alumni Association – where he led a two-year term as President. He has also been active in supporting and attending the various alumni initiatives on campus, such as the Extern Program, Backpack to Briefcase, Alumni Cafe, Show me the Green judging event, 50th Anniversary Gala, and has been a presenter on the undergraduate student panel for the Department of Political Science. Mr. Vahed has served as a staff member for both the UTM and St. George Campus where he facilitated the development of equity policy for staff, faculty and students. He also established two academic prizes in comparative politics and the study of political Islam.

Mr. Vahed has supported his community beyond the university; for example in serving on the Toronto Board of Directors of the Institute of Public Administration of Canada, chairing the committee to select the recipient of the Lieutenant Governor's Medal Of Distinction in Public Administration, as a Course Instructor for the Ontario Public Service, and as the Founder and Vice-Chair for Tomorrow’s Ontario Public Service. Recently he was the 2022 recipient of U of T’s Arbor Award. Some of his past honours include receiving the Ontario Public Service Amethyst Award, the highest award for a public servant issued by the Ontario public service. As a student, Vahed was also the recipient of the Gordan Cressy Student Leadership Award and the OISE Commendation Award issued by the University of Toronto.

Mr. Vahed is currently a Director at the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services. In this role he leads a team that provides strategic advice to government as well as programs and services that support children with special needs and their families across the province of Ontario. He is serving his second term on the UTM Campus Council, until June 30, 2024.
