Professor Nhung Tuyet Tran is Associate Professor in the Department of History. Trained in Chinese legal and gender history and Southeast Asian social history, she researches, writes, and teaches about the relationship between gender, religion, and the law in Vietnam.

She has recently completed a book entitled Vietnamese Catholic Identity in the Early modern World, (1624-1800) and is working on two monograph histories. The first examines the property transfers between indigenous Cham women and Vietnamese settlers at the edges of the Vietnamese empire, and the second, a history of the book in Vietnam.  

Professor Tran was lead international expert for the United Nations Development Program's (UNDP) study evaluating women's access to land rights across ten provinces in Vietnam. She served as director of the Centre of Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Toronto and as the Associate Chair, Undergraduate in the Department of History. Outside of the University, she has served on the Editorial Board of the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Asian History, as the Chair of the Southeast Asia Council of the Association for Asian Studies, and on the the Board Directors of the Association for Asian Studies.

Professor Tran received a BA from the University of Pennsylvania, and a PhD from the University of California.
