how are DAB members selected?
For information on membership, please see Section 2 of the Discipline Appeals Board Terms of Reference.
The Discipline Appeals Board ("DAB") shall consist of the Senior Chair and the two Associate Chairs of the University Tribunal, and:
i) six members or former members of the University Affairs Board or of Governing Council , of whom at least four shall be students; and
ii) six members or former members of the Academic Board , of whom three shall be students and three faculty members
University Affairs Board Members of the DAB
- Current and former members of the University Affairs Board (UAB) and the Governing Council (GC) are canvassed to find out if they wish to serve on the DAB (or continue, if they are already members of the DAB).
- The Director, Appeals, Discipline and Faculty Grievances reviews the list of candidates.
- The candidates are recommended to the Striking Committee of the UAB and the Striking Committee considers the recommendations.
- The Striking Committee of the University Affairs Board makes recommendations to the UAB for appointment to the DAB.
- The UAB considers for approval the Striking Committee’s recommendations for appointments to the DAB.
- Appointments are communicated to the members with a copy to the ADFG office.
Academic Board Members of the DAB
- Current members of the DAB are asked if they wish to continue to serve the DAB.
- Faculty members who will be members of the Academic Board in the upcoming year are asked to complete an online form in March-April, which contains a list of boards and committees on which they may to choose to serve.
- Information is extracted from the online form for use by the Striking Committee of the Academic Board.
- Teaching staff who select the Discipline Appeals Board as one of the governance bodies on which they would like to serve are considered for membership by the Striking Committee of the Academic Board.
- The Director of Appeals, Discipline and Faculty Grievances reviews the list of candidates before they are recommended to the Striking Committee.
- The Striking Committee of the Academic Board makes recommendations on faculty and student members of DAB.
- The Academic Board considers for approval the Striking Committee’s recommendations for appointments to the DAB at the final Board meeting each year.
- Appointments are communicated to the members with a copy to the ADFG office.
*NOTE: There is no rule preventing a member of DAB from being a member of University Tribunal, however, if there is an overlap, the individual may not sit on the same case at both levels.
non-academic discipline appeal panels
Non-academic discipline matters that come before the Discipline Appeals Board are heard by the following: the Senior Chair or an Associate Chair, who shall be a voting member, and three other members designated by the Senior Chair or Associate Chair. Each panel will include at least two student members, and will be drawn preferably from members of the University Affairs Board ("UAB") or the Governing Council ("GC").
The panel members are usually drawn from the pool of "UAB" appointments.
