THREE CAMPUSES
The University of Toronto is comprised of three campuses: the St. George campus, the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM), and the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC). Although the campuses themselves are separate, their academic communities are linked through programs of study and common research interests. The St. George campus buildings, in downtown Toronto, are home to the largest number of students and programs. Scarborough campus, about 30 kilometres to the east, has its own academic community nested on 120 hectares of protected parkland. The Mississauga campus, about 30 kilometres to the west of St. George, is situated on the curve of the Credit River.
THE COLLEGE SYSTEM
The University is composed of several colleges, each with a distinctive feel and sense of community. All students in the oldest and largest faculty, the Faculty of Arts and Science, must register in a college. The benefit of college membership has been extended to the professional faculties; accordingly, two of the colleges - Innis and New - are multi-faculty colleges accepting some professional students as well as students in Arts and Science.
The St. George colleges owned and operated entirely by the University are:
The federated universities represent separate legal entities with their own independent boards. They appoint their own staff and own their own buildings but their Arts and Science teaching staff, curriculum and students are an integral part of the Faculty of Arts and Science of the University. They are:
In addition to the undergraduate colleges, the University is also the site of a consortium of independent theological colleges (Toronto School of Theology), which offer graduate academic instruction in theology as well as their own individual pastoral degrees. The consortium includes Knox College, St, Augustine’s, Wycliffe, Regis, Emmanuel (within Victoria College), Trinity and St. Michael’s.
Massey College is an incorporated body providing residential and other amenities for students registered in the School of Graduate Studies.
FACULTIES AND SCHOOLS
Students enroll for a program of studies in one of the faculties or schools. There are 14 professional faculties and schools, in addition to the Faculty of Arts and Science, the School of Graduate Studies and the School of Continuing Studies. Of these, the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto and the Faculty of Medicine are the largest and consist of multiple departments. Almost all of the buildings and facilities of the professional faculties are located on the downtown campus. Some divisions have interdisciplinary centres and institutes associated with them.
