Minutes of the College of Electors virtual meeting held on Wednesday, May 18, 2022 at 5:00 p.m.

  1. Chair’s Remarks
    The Chair welcomed members and guests to the final meeting of the 2021-2022 governance year. Ms Jay thanked members for their endurance, patience and participation over the last two years in the virtual world of governance and that the College was able to successfully fulfill all of its respective duties.

    Recognition of Ms Joan Johnston, Alumni Governor
    The Chair advised members that Governing Council lost one of its members in March 2022 – Ms Joan Johnston – an Alumni Governor elected by the College in February 2020 had passed away. 

    The Chair stated that Ms Johnston was a deeply engaged Alumni Governor, bringing a wealth of experience to her role; and had been actively involved in the University community over many years, serving on the St. Michael’s College Alumni Board and the SMC Collegium, and as a former President of the University of Toronto Alumni Association (UTAA).

  2. Report of the 2021-2022 Nominating Committee for the Executive Committee (NC-EC) of the College of Electors
    The Chair informed the College of the process by which the Executive Committee was elected each year. She said that the 2021-2022 Nominating Committee for the Executive Committee (NC-EC) was composed of three members: Dr. Judy Beamish (Medicine), Daniel Correia (KPE) and Judy Newman (Social Work).

    Ms Newman then presented the Committee’s report.

    i. Vice-Chair
    On motion duly moved, seconded and carried
    It Was Resolved
    THAT Mark Surchin (Faculty of Law) be appointed Vice-Chair of the College of Electors for 2022-2023.

    ii. Executive Committee
    On motion duly moved, seconded and carried
    It Was Resolved
    THAT John Paul Lotesto (University of Toronto Mississauga), David Plant (Trinity College) and Dr. Cindy Sinclair (Ontario institute for Study of Education), be appointed to the Executive Committee of the College of Electors for 2022-23.
    The Chair congratulated the members of the 2022-2023 Executive Committee and thanked the 2021-2022 NC-EC for their work.
     
  3. Selection of the 2022-2023 Nominating Committee for the Executive Committee
    The Chair reminded members of the role of the Nominating Committee for the Executive Committee (NC-EC) as per the College’s Constitution. Manny Antonio Bettencourt (University of Toronto Mississauga), Larissa Rodo (Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering) and Eve Leung (Faculty of Information) volunteered to sit on the 2022-2023 NC-EC.

    The Chair thanked them for their willingness to serve in that capacity.

  4. Minutes of the Previous Meeting – February 23, 2022
    On a motion duly moved, seconded and carried
    It Was Resolved
    THAT the minutes of the meeting of February 22, 2022 be approved, as corrected.
  5. Business Arising from the Minutes of the Previous Meeting
    There was no business arising from the minutes of the previous meeting
     
  6. Date of Next Meeting
    The Chair reminded members that the next meeting would be held in-person in mid-September from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.  Members would receive an update from the Secretary.
     
  7. Other Business

    Reflections of Alumni Members of the Governing Council

    The Chair welcomed the alumni governors (4) and alumni governor-elects (3) who had joined the meeting and invited them to share some of their experiences with the College. In delivering their remarks, the alumni governors spoke on a range of matters.

    The Chair thanked the alumni governors for their valuable reflections and for their excellent service as ambassadors for the University.  She wished each continued success, bade farewell to Harvey Botting and Samra Zafar who were completing their terms, and wished the best to the three incoming Alumni Governors.
     
  8. Chair’s Closing Remarks
    The Chair thanked members of the 2021-2022 Executive Committee: Jennifer Dolman (Vice-Chair) (University College), Demetra Dimokopoulos (UTM), Dr. Cindy Sinclair (OISE) and Mark Surchin (Law) for having supported her as Chair of the College. They had given generously of their time and assistance.

    The Chair also thanked all members of the College for their dedication and acknowledged the other members who would end their service on the College this year.

    The Chair presented a virtual certificate of appreciation to the following out-going members:
